First Half Struggles Hurt Spartans in Loss to OCC

A slow start in the first half hurt the Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball Team in Saturday's loss to the nationally-ranked squad from Onondaga Community College.

The Spartans found themselves down double-digits early in the first half, but climbed back into the contest to trail by just eight at halftime to the Lazers (18-3, 6-0). Cayuga was unable to cut further into the Lazers' lead, however, losing 82-66.

The loss drops the Spartans' record to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference.

The Spartans struggled early in the first half, trailing 11-1 and 24-9 before narrowing the Lazers' first-half lead to 42-34. The Lazers outpaced Cayuga in the second half, however, to secure the win.

Cayuga was able to hold one of Region III's top scorers, Latyce Faison, to eight points, but four other Lazers scored more than 10 points, and the Spartans made only 14 of 27 free throws.

Cayuga guard Deonte Holder led the Spartans with 15 points to go with nine rebounds and three assists. Shaheed Alcide had 12 points and nine rebounds, Jacob Ramirez added 10 points and five assists and Jewliann Chery had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Spartans next play Wednesday, January 29, in a conference road contest at Corning. Cayuga lost 77-76 to the Red Barons earlier this year. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
