Cayuga Community College Baseball used a deep lineup and strong pitching performances to sweep Columbia-Greene Community College on Thursday.

The Spartans took an early lead in both games and didn't let up, winning shortened contests by scores of 12-2 and 10-0. With the wins Cayuga is now 13-3 on the season and 9-1 in Region III.

Cayuga Coach John Rizzo said the Spartans played two balanced games with strong performances at the plate, in the field and on the mound.

"We did well in the three main facets of the game — great pitching, no errors and our bats came alive. Two great games today," said Rizzo.

The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, with two runs scoring on a triple by Tyler Korsky. Solo runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings pushed their lead to 6-0, but the Twins cut the lead to 6-2 in the sixth. Cayuga responded with six runs in the bottom half to end the game, with Mike Norton, Juan Perez, Alex Gaudet and Roy Glaum driving in runs.

Matt Rumney threw a complete game to earn the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out five. Korsky went three-for-three with three runs and two RBI, and Gaudet went two-for-three. Norton and Perez each had two RBI, and Phil Messina, Caleb Delly and Luke Ough scored twice.

Cayuga jumped on the Twins again in the second game, scoring five runs in the second inning on five hits. Perez knocked in two runs with a double, and Messina and Glaum also had RBIs in the inning. The Spartans scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to finish the game.
