Cayuga Community College Baseball bounced back from a tough opening loss to earn a road and season split with #5 Herkimer College on Saturday.

The Spartans lost a 3-0 lead in the opener and fell 6-3, but came back behind a strong start from Luke Ough and a balanced lineup to take the second game 11-8 against the defending national champion Generals. Cayuga improved to 23-7 on the season and 19-5 in Region III play.

Cayuga starter Keegan Ferris and Herkimer's Joel Hayner threw zeros in the first three innings, but Cayuga struck in the fourth on an RBI single by Alex Gaudet, scoring Mike Norton and Juan Perez. The Spartans tacked on another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Fernando Espinal, but Herkimer responded with four runs in the frame and two more in the sixth for the win.

Five Spartans finished with one hit in the game, with Norton also walking twice and Phil Messina scoring a run.

The Spartans again took the early lead in the second game and refused to surrender it despite a late Generals' rally. A sacrifice fly by Norton scored Messina to open the scoring in the first, and Norton doubled home Messina and Tyler Korsky in the third to stretch the lead to three.

Cayuga led 3-2 when they exploded for four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Perez singled home Korsky, then an RBI single by Brandon Hoftijzer and two-RBI double by Espinal increased the lead to 7-2 in the fifth. In the sixth, singles by Caleb Delly, Hoftijzer and Espinal made it 11-2. The Generals plated five in the sixth and one in the seventh before Connor McMahon got the final out with the bases loaded to give Cayuga the win.

Korsky finished the second game four-for-five with three runs and a triple, and Norton and Espinal both had three RBI. Perez and Hoftijzer had three hits, with Hoftijzer driving in two runs and Perez finishing with a run and RBI. Ough threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing two earned runs.

The Spartans are scheduled to host Hudson Valley Community College for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 23. First pitch is slated for noon.
