Cayuga Community College Baseball picked up a home win Sunday against Hudson Valley Community College behind a complete game from Connor McMahon and a three-run homer by Fernando Espinal.

Cayuga overcame an early deficit in the opener en route to a 5-3 win, but lost in the second game when the Vikings scored three in the seventh for a 6-3 final. The Spartans are now 24-8 this season and 20-6 in Region III play.

Coach John Rizzo said the Spartans played a solid game in the opener but couldn't duplicate that in the second contest.

"We played a clean first game and came up with timely hits and got a nice win," said Rizzo. "The second game we made too many mistakes. We can still get three out of four and take the series, and that's the goal. We are in control of our own destiny."

Cayuga surrendered a run in the second inning of the opener before consecutive singles by Alex Gaudet and Brandon Hoftijzer setup Espinal's homer in the third, giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead. The Vikings briefly tied the game before the Spartans reclaimed the lead with an RBI single by Hoftijzer in the fourth. Cayuga added an insurance run in the fifth on a single by Luke Ough, scoring Tyler Korsky.

McMahon retired the final eight batters in the complete game, scattering eight hits over seven innings. Korsky, Ough and Hoftijzer each went two-for-three with a run, with Ough and Hoftijzer also finishgin with an RBI.

The Spartans came back from two early deficits in the nightcap but were never able to take the lead. Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Hoftijzer scored Juan Perez on a sacrifice fly and Caleb Delly scored on a pass ball to tie the game. Cayuga threatened in the fifth and sixth, but the game stayed tied until the Vikings scored the deciding runs in the seventh.

Matt Rumney threw 6 2/3 innings for Cayuga, striking out two and allowing 10 hits. Perez was two-for-three with a double and run, and Delly scored twice.

The Spartans are on the road at Hudson Valley for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 26. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
