Cayuga Community College Baseball tied its program record for wins Monday with a sweep of Jefferson Community College.

The Spartans captured the season series 3-1 against the Cannoneers and closed their division schedule with wins of 16-6 and 8-2 over Jefferson. The sweep makes the Spartans 27-11 on the season, tying the program wins record set by the 2022 Spartans.

"We played cleaner games today. They were a good way for us to finish the regional part of our schedule," said Cayuga Coach John Rizzo. "We've got a couple games left to build on this and get rolling for the playoffs."

The Spartans took control early, with Perry Chetney blasting a solo homer in the second to score the first of eight runs in the inning. Cayuga capitalized on five walks in the frame, with Fernando Espinal, Tyler Korsky and Alex Gaudet each having RBI hits. After Jefferson cut the margin to 8-4, the Spartans plated four more in the fifth, including runs on a double Mike Norton and triple by Juan Perez.

Cayuga collected 17 hits in the first game, with Espinal and Korsky collecting three hits apiece and scoring twice. Norton and Perez finished with three runs, and Gaudet collected two hits, two runs and two RBI. Luke Ough got the win for the Spartans, throwing four innings and allowing two earned runs.

Cayuga continued dominating in the second game, scoring in each of the first five innings while starting pitcher Will Coleman held the Cannoneers scoreless. Leading 3-0 in the third, the Spartans added two runs with Caleb Delly's two-out single scoring Chetney before Delly scored later in the inning. The Spartans added two more in the fifth when Brandon Hoftijzer tripled home Delly and later scored on a single by Espinal.

Coleman threw four innings for the win, allowing only two hits and striking out four. Chetney, Delly and Hoftijzer finished with two hits apiece, and Delly, Hoftijzer and Espinal scored twice.

Cayuga is home Thursday, May 4, to host Corning Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
