A strong start from freshman Cam Langille and a three-run homer from Perry Chetney gave Cayuga Community College Baseball a split with Division II's Monroe Community College on Sunday.

After dropping the first game 11-2, the Spartans rebounded behind Langille's six-plus innings of two-run ball to pull out a 6-2 win. Cayuga is now 5-5 on the season.

"We responded well after losing the first game. Cam threw well, and we cleaned up our mistakes to get out of the doubleheader with a split," said Cayuga Coach John Rizzo.

In the opener, the Tribunes did all their damage early, plating 11 runs in the first four innings while the Spartans failed to score. Cayuga scored twice in the fifth, with Mike Blowers and Kevin Dolan scoring on Mike DeRosa's two-run single.

DeRosa and Chetney both went two-for-three in the first game, with DeRosa hitting a double and tallying the team's only RBIs. Dolan and Bradley Soto Diaz also had hits.

Langille controlled the second game, surrendering five hits through 6 1/3 innings while striking out three. Chetney's homer in the third scored Dolan and DeRosa, and Dolan's RBI single scoring Jacob Laird made it 4-0 Cayuga in the fourth. The Spartans tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh before Brantley Griggs earned a save by pitching Cayuga out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh.

Chetney went two-for-four in the nightcap, scoring twice to go with his three RBI. Six other Spartans had hits, and Juan Perez and Owen Browne each had an RBI.

Cayuga is on the road Tuesday, March 19, to face Mid-State Athletic Conference foe Corning Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
