Spartans Earn Conference Honors
Six members of Cayuga Community College's Baseball team received Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) accolades this week after strong regular seasons that helped the Spartans reach the playoffs.
Perry Chetney, Brantley Griggs, Juan Perez and Bradley Soto-Diaz were named All-Conference, with Kevin Dolan and Alex Gaudet receiving Honorable Mentions for their 2024 campaigns. The Spartans, who finished 11-3 in conference play, were the 2024 MSAC runner-up behind Finger Lakes Community College.
Chetney led the Spartans with a .384 batting average, four homers and 32 RBI. The Spartans' primary backstop this season, Chetney threw out more than 46 percent of potential basestealers, the second-best percentage nationally. His season total of 18 runners caught stealing is the third-most in NJCAA Division III.
One of the Spartans' top relievers this season, Griggs tied for the team lead with five wins while posting a 2.51 ERA, two saves and averaging more than a strikeout per inning.
First baseman Perez and centerfielder Soto-Diaz were also leaders in the Spartans' lineup, with Perez batting .350 and finishing second on the team with 25 RBI. Soto-Diaz set a new Cayuga record with 26 stolen bases while also batting .374, leading the team with 29 runs scored, and finishing the season with a perfect fielding percentage.
Infielders Dolan and Gaudet were also key contributors for Cayuga. Dolan led the Spartans with a .477 OBP and batted .350, while Gaudet batted .326 and finished with an OBP of .413.
The Spartans' postseason begins Saturday, May 11, at Falcon Park, where they will host Genesee Community College in a best-of-three series of nine-inning contests. The first of the two games scheduled for Saturday will begin at noon. The third game, if necessary, will be Sunday, May 12.
The series winner will advance to the Regional Tournament, which begins May 16 at Falcon Park.
