Postseason Starts Saturday for Spartans

Cayuga Community College Baseball enters the postseason this weekend after a strong regular season and a second-place finish in the East Division of Region III.

The Spartans will host Genesee Community College in a best-of-three series at Falcon Park, with a doubleheader of nine-inning contests opening the series at noon on Saturday, May 11. The third game, if necessary, is slated for Sunday at noon.

The series winner will advance to the Region III Tournament, scheduled to start at Falcon Park on Thursday, May 16.

Cayuga enters the postseason having won 12 of their final 14 games and finishing with a 23-13 record and a 15-5 mark in the East Division. As the division's second-place finisher, the Spartans will host the Cougars, who finished third in the West Division with a record of 23-20 and 21-10 in divisional play.

The teams met earlier this season at Falcon Park, with the Spartans coming away with two close wins by scores of 6-3 and 5-4.

A balanced lineup and strong pitching staff led the Spartans throughout the season. Catcher Perry Chetney led the Cayuga with four homers, 32 RBI and a .384 average, and first baseman Juan Perez batted .350 with 25 RBI. Centerfielder Bradley Soto-Diaz batted .374, led the team with 29 runs scored and set a program record with 26 stolen bases on the season.

On the mound the Spartans were led by Matt Rumney, Austin Doyle-Miller, Brantley Griggs and Cam Langille. Doyle-Miller and Griggs tied for the team lead with five wins apiece, with Griggs finishing with a 2.51 ERA. Rumney finished the regular season with three wins and a team-high 46-plus innings pitched, and Langille had four wins and a 3.63 ERA.

The Cougars are led at the plate by Patricio Garcia and Anthony Brotz, both of whom finished with batting averages over .400. Pitchers Shawn Kimball (3.00 ERA) and Julian Jones (3.46 ERA) paced the Cougars on the mound, with Jones finishing with a team-high four wins.
