Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball couldn't overcome a halftime deficit in a road loss to Genesee Community College on Saturday.

The Spartans trailed by 15 at the break but cut the lead to one on a three-pointer by Jorge Jimenez with more than half the second frame left to play. The Cougars took control of the game down the stretch, though, handing Cayuga a 75-58 loss.

Both offenses started slow before an 11-0 Cougars run put the Spartans in an early deficit. Free throws by Cayuga forward Tony Borges cut the margin to seven with eight minutes left, but Genesee went on an 8-2 run in the final two minutes to lead 47-32 at the break.

Cayuga cut the Cougars' lead to seven in the second half behind buckets from Borges, Chris Kirkland and Wol Machteng. Jimenez then connected on back-to-back three-pointers to make it 54-53, putting Cayuga at the edge of erasing the Cougars' halftime lead. Genesee locked down the Spartans for the rest of the game, outscoring Cayuga 21-5 in the final 10 minutes.

Kirkland led Cayuga with 16 points while also grabbing eight rebounds. Desean Strachan finished with nine points, DJ Johnson and Jimenez had eight points apiece, Borges had nine rebounds and three assists, and Sean Pope had 10 rebounds.

Cayuga is back on the road Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Onondaga Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
