Spartans’ Comeback Falls Short

A late comeback by Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball fell just short against North Country Community College on Sunday.

The Spartans couldn't hold a slim lead in the second half, falling behind before attempting a comeback in the final seconds thanks to three-pointers from Tony Borges and Hunter Martin. Cayuga ultimately ran out of time, losing 70-66.

North Country held a small lead early in the first half, with the Spartans pulling even on a three-pointer from DJ Johnson. Cayuga took its first lead later on a three-pointer from Chris Kirkland, but trailed 35-33 at halftime.

The Spartans came out strong in the second half, building a 50-41 advantage less than eight minutes into the frame. The Saints trimmed Cayuga's lead to 52-51 with 10 minutes left before taking the lead. Cayuga trailed by eight before a three-pointer from Martin and then another by Borges made it 70-66 with less than 15 seconds left.

Borges finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Cayuga, with Martin adding 13 points. Desean Strachan had eight points and five rebounds, and Jorge Jimenez had nine points, all in the second half.

Cayuga is on the road again Wednesday, February 7, this time at SUNY Broome. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
