Spartans Win MSAC Title

The Cayuga Spartans Golf Team captured the team's first Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship in more than two decades when they won the Jefferson Community College Invitational on April 26.

Fighting through blustery spring weather, the Spartans finished with a team score of 324, strong enough for a comfortable eight stroke win over runner-up Onondaga Community College. It's the Spartans' first MSAC Championship since 1998.

Cayuga showed a strong scoring balance, with Hunter Hubel and EJ Townsend shooting 78 and Ryan Chalupnicki and Cody Helmer each shooting 84.

Also competing for the Spartans were John Rice, Matt Micglire and Christian Ryan.

Jenna Fields also continued her strong play for Cayuga, placing third overall in the women's division.

The following day, the Spartans again played well in the Hudson Valley Community College Invitational. Hubel was the tournament medalist, shooting a 74, while Rice tied for fifth with an 82. Fields had another solid score, placing second.

The Spartans wrap-up their regular season schedule with invitationals at Niagara and Genesee community colleges before competing in the NJCAA Region III Golf Championships on May 13-14.
