Cayuga Men Kick Off Season With Win at Clinton

The Cayuga Spartans men's soccer team kicked off their 2011 season with a win on the road at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh NY.  Bruno Gaudie-Ley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) opened the scoring for the Spartans 13 minutes into the first half with an unassisted goal, past the oncoming Clinton keeper. In the 29th, minute his fellow countryman, Mario Paiva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), continued the scoring for Cayuga with an assisted pass in the box from Nahayo Manasse (Fowler, Syracuse NY).

The Spartans hit the back of the net two minutes later when a shot from Mario Paiva was deflected into the goal off one of the Clinton defenders. Just before half time, Paiva scored his third in the game on a free kick just outside the box. Paiva notched the hat trick goal just over the wall and into the net before the half. The Spartans conceded a goal from a non-contested header just past the Spartan keeper Sean Dockrell (Dublin, Ireland) during the second half.

Coach Wynne picked up his first win as head coach of the men's program, and his first collegiate win of his coaching career. He had this to say about the game, "I thought we played very well in the first half of the match, but we needed to work a little harder in the second half of the game to move the ball more quickly. Clinton put us under a lot of pressure in the second half, where we conceded a goal off a set piece, and could have conceded more if not for our well organized defense. Overall, the whole team put forth a stellar performance, and I was proud of the effort they displayed in the heat today".

The Cayuga Spartans outshot the Clinton Cougars 20-1 for the contest. The women's and men's team return to action to play against visiting Corning on Wednesday, September 7th at Emerson Park in Auburn at 3:00pm and 5:00pm, respectively.
