Men's Soccer Ties On The Road At Jefferson CC 1-1

The Spartans headed for the Watertown Fairgrounds in tonight's clash against Jefferson CC. The Spartan men started very quickly, keeping possession and took only 6 minutes before Nahayo Manasse (Syracuse, NY) got on the score sheet. Bruno Gaudie-Ley (Rio, Brazil) passed a through ball past the defense for Manasse…who slipped a shot just past the Jefferson goalkeeper. Cayuga kept the pressure on for most of the first half taking a total of 15 shots at the Jefferson goal, but couldn't find the back of the net and it remained 1-0 at the half.

With a little adjusting at the half, Cayuga held off Jefferson, until a mistake on the Cayuga defense end allowed Cory Walker to hit a shot past Sean Dockrell (Dublin, Ireland) to tie the game in the 65th minute. The Spartans kept pushing to score the winner, but a string of fine saves from Jefferson keeper Phil Clarke sent the game into over-time.

The first period of over-time saw chances at both ends with Cayuga's Mario Paiva (Rio, Brazil) going one on one with the keeper with Clarke denying the shot once again. Cayuga's pressure didn't finalize a winning goal, and the Spartans out-shot the Cannoneers 30-5 to finish a 1-1 tie after 2 OT's. Sean Dockrell (Dublin, Ireland) finished with 8 saves.

Coach Wynne had this to say, "It was unfortunate result tonight considering the chances we had, but that's the way it goes sometimes to be honest. The mistake in the defense end was an unusual one for us, but we are not perfect and there is room for improvement all over the pitch. I thought the team overall played very well, and Elisa Owusu was the defensive player of the match, a solid performance from him tonight, but we just have to get ready for Broome at home on Saturday 9/17.
