Men's Soccer Get Stung by the Hornets

The Cayuga men's soccer team traveled 2 hours south to Binghamton New York, to face MSAC rivals Broome Community College. The game started well for the Spartans and goalkeeper Bior Ajak (Syracuse, NY) was called into action early making some good saves in the first few minutes. The Broome Hornets opened up the scoring in the 9th minute with fantastic one on one effort and sliding the ball past the oncoming Ajak.  Just 5 minutes later the Spartan men saw Bior Ajak receive a red card for an infraction with a Broome player that left the Spartans a man down for the rest of the game. Michael Mitchell (Auburn, NY) stepped into the net for Cayuga and had to face a PK in his debut for the Spartans. The kick was converted and the Hornets then scored again 12 minutes later to put the half time score at 3-0.

The second half saw Mitchell make some very good saves to try and keep the Spartan cause alive. Will Backhouse (Swinton, England), Heri Muke (Syracuse, NY) and Mike Vanderhoof (Auburn, NY) all getting chances in front of the Hornets net but the Broome keeper was equal to the task. Broome put the game well away from the Spartans grasp in the second half scoring another 2 goals. Coach Wynne had this to say, "It was unfortunate regarding Bior getting sent off in the first 15 minutes but the card was deserved. I thought Mitchell played well considering he's not our first choice keeper. I also thought we battled well but people's heads drop when someone important to the team gets sent off. Key players played very well and battled for the 90 minutes (Backhouse, Boxx, Muke, and both Wheat brothers) but it wasn't enough. We just have to be better".
