Brazilian Freshman Samba's Hat-trick Past Jefferson

Brazilian Freshman Samba's Hat-trick Past Jefferson
Watertown, NY - The Cayuga Men's Soccer team kicked off their 2013 season tonight, when they faced Jefferson Community College at the Fairgrounds in Watertown, New York.

The Spartan Men started well with good possession and passing. As the game progressed they controlled the pace of the game and it took only 9 minutes for Cayuga to get on the scoresheet. Freshman Diogo Paiva (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) opened up his Cayuga scoring account…with Derek Southworth working down the right hand side of the pitch, then passing it to Paiva just inside to the 18- yard box. Paiva finished putting it past the JCC keeper to make it 1-0 to CCC.

Twenty one minutes later Captain Jason Boxx (London, England) volleyed home a vicious strike, from the flick on by Freshman Robert Carter (York, England) to put the Spartans 2-0 up.

Cayuga added to the scoring again in the 34th minute when Boxx was pushed in the back inside the 18- yard box and the referee awarded Cayuga a PK. Freshman Captain Sean Wynn (Liverpool, England) stepped up to put it past the JCC keeper to give Cayuga a 3-0 lead going into half-time.

When the second half began JCC pressure well and made it more difficult for Cayuga to score, but they stood up to the challenge and settled into their style of play. In the 67th minute, Carter and Paiva again teamed up to get the Brazilian on the scoresheet for the second time in the game,  with Paiva striking from 18 yards to launch the Spartans into a 4-0 lead.

Cayuga wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted effort, with the Paiva showing some brilliant individual skills to chip it over the oncoming keeper to claim his hat-trick and put the Spartans 5-0 up against the Cannoneers.

Jefferson got on the scoreboard in the 81st minute with a late goal when they put the ball past by the Cayuga keeper Mohamned Ouro-Sama. Ouro-Sama finished with 6 saves and a very solid performance in net.

Coach Wynne after the game commented, "I thought we played very well overall. Midfield at times was a little sloppy with their shape, but settled well within the game. Matthew Harty-Spencer (Sunderland, England) had a fantastic game, but was very unlucky not to score finishing with about 6 or 7 shots. Our defense played solid with James Green (Willaston, England), Mustapha Bility (Syracuse, New York), Ryan & Mike Killian (Auburn, New York), Jason Boxx (London, England) all putting in a stellar performance. Green picked up a head injury and we'll have to wait to see how he goes over the coming days. But overall, I was very happy with the team to pick up their first win of the season and first MSAC Conference win.

CCC now goes on the road for the next two games away to Clinton CC and North Country CC on Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
