Cayuga Spartans Upend Broome To Stay Unbeaten.

Auburn, N.Y. - The Broome Hornets traveled to the Cayuga Spartans home ground of Emerson Park, in Auburn N.Y. today, to face off in the NJCAA Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference match up.

The Cayuga Men's Soccer program was looking to extend their unbeaten record, but knew the value of Broome's quality team. With the game kicking off, the competition was back and forth with a lot of the possession going in favor of the Spartans. It wasn't long before the Spartans got on the score sheet. When Sean Wynn (Liverpool, England), got fouled and won a free kick, just outside the box. Wynn placed the ball well into the box and fellow captain Jason Boxx (London, England) headed home to put the Spartans up 1-0 in the 23rd minute. Four minutes later, Ryan Killian (Scipio, N.Y.) put Cayuga up 2-0 in the 27th minute with an unassisted goal. With the half time whistle blowing to end the first half, it was Cayuga 2-0.

With the second half underway, both sides had some early chances but Cayuga stood strong with some good possession and defending. The Cayuga Spartans put their final seal on the game when Derek Southworth (Fulton, N.Y.) scored from a goal-line scramble, which saw Derek's first effort hit both posts, and rebound to a shot from Mohammed Ouro-Sama (Manhattan, N.Y.) which Southworth chipping the ball over the Broome keeper and defense. Cayuga finished the game with 25 shots. Tautis Poniskaitis finished with 6 saves and conceding no goals in 180 minutes of play, with a total of 10 saves in his 2 games in net. Tautis has 2 collegiate shutouts in his career at Cayuga, so far. Jason Boxx finished with 6 shots. Sean Wynn and Ryan Killian both had 4 shots. Broome had a total of 14 fouls and Cayuga had 15 fouls.

Coach Wynne was delighted with the win and had this to say. "It was a great win for the boys, because we knew Broome had a good team and we knew that it was going to be a tough game for us. I thought the boys played well and worked hard off the ball to win it back. Delighted that we are 4-0-1, and it's the best start for the program since I've been here, as head coach".

The team prepares for the arrival of Jamestown in Auburn on Saturday and looks to stay undefeated.
