Spartans Upend Hornets on Road

Binghamton, N.Y. - The Cayuga men's soccer team traveled to Broome Community College to face the Hornets today, after compiling a 4-0 start to the season. The Spartans started slow and conceded the first goal, in the first 14 minutes when Broome attacked down the right hand side and the Hornet's #10 Philip Youngs, crossed the ball to fellow teammate #4 Nathan Krome, who put the ball past the Cayuga keeper, Tautis Poniskaitis.

It took the Spartans about 20 minutes to get going in the game, but the Spartans squared it up 1-1, with the first goal coming from freshman Connor Field (Felixstowe, England). Captain Sean Wynn (Liverpool, England) got the ball in the midfield and played a brilliant through ball over the top of the Broome defense to the on-running Field, to put the ball past the Hornets keeper, Tyler Hinds. It didn't take the Spartans long after the first goal was scored, for Cayuga to go 2-1 up in the first half. Connor Field assisted other freshman Thomas Rivet (London, England), as Rivet placed the ball under Hinds to put the Spartans in front. The Cayuga Spartans went 3-1 up just before the half, when Connor Field played left winger Joey Rees (Cardiff, Wales) through, to finish into the bottom corner, and finished the half up 3-1.

The second half started off with the same pace from the first. When Captain Sean Wynn again placed a lovely weighted pass into freshman Chris Davison (Newcastle, England), who scored in the 60th minute to push the lead to 4-1, in favor of the Spartans. The scoring ended soon after, when freshman Rob Latham (Portishead, England) flicked on a header to fellow freshman Paul McCormick (Glasgow, Scotland), before McCormick rifled a goal into the top left upper 90, worthy of ESPN's Top 10 plays of the day. The final whistle sounded and the Spartans won comfortably 5-1.

We caught up with Coach Wynne after the game and he had this to say, "I thought we were very slow coming out of the gate, and Broome punished us for some bad defending in the first 15 minutes when they went 1-0 up. I felt we deserved what they were dishing out in the beginning of the game. But I'm glad we didn't hang our heads and motored on to a great overall team win. Hats off to Connor Field who had a goal and two assists, as well as Captain Sean Wynn who had two assists also. I have to say Broome have been one of the better teams we've played this season in terms of working 90 minutes, and played some really good soccer. Hats off to Coach Chris and his players". The Spartans moved to 5-0 for the season and turn around to play Jamestown away on Friday.
