#10 Cayuga Men’s Move to 7-0, Beat Genesee 2-0

Auburn, N.Y. - The Cayuga men's soccer program faced Thruway rival Genesee Community College at Emerson Park in a NJCAA Region 3 match-up today. The Spartan men moved to 7-0 record for the season, knocking off the Region's #5 ranked Genesee. The Spartans who are nationally ranked 10th by the NJCAA, faced with a tough test today against GCC. With the whistle getting the game underway, Cayuga found the pace early and set the tone from the starting whistle, with some good early possession. Genesee was put to the defensive right away, and sucked up a lot of Spartan pressure. In the 17th minute, Spartan Captain Sean Wynn (Liverpool, England) scored directly from a corner kick into the back post, which struck the inside of the bar and dropped into the net to put the Spartans up, 1-0. Cayuga had a lot of early chances, with some good saves coming from the Genesee keeper, Connor Halstead. With the referee blowing the whistle to end the half, it was Cayuga 1, Genesee 0.

With the second half under way, the Cayuga men struggled to find their possession game, and were put under a lot of pressure from the Genesee Cougars. Both teams came close to scoring, but missed some close chances, and the pendulum could have swung either way. The Spartan men finally got it together, with some good combination play between Matthew Spencer (Sunderland, England), Tom Rivet (London, England), Paul McCormick (Glasgow, England) and forward Chris Davison (Newcastle, England) in the final third of the field, with some shots coming close to increasing the score line for the Spartans. In the 66th minute of the game, Freshman Paul McCormick spilt the Cougars defense with a great through ball into fellow freshman, Chris Davison (Newcastle, England) who put the Spartans up 2-0. With the Spartans keeping the pressure on, and the Cougars doing the same, the final 20 minutes became a nail biter. After some chances going wide, the final whistle came to finish the game with the Spartans prevailing and winning 2-0 over Genesee Community College.

Coach Wynne after the game…"I told the boys today that the rankings meant nothing, and I said it to keep them grounded. The target on our backs is getting bigger with every game we play. The lads have been really enjoying their Football (soccer) so far this season, and the boys have been working really hard in practices. They know what's at stake, they know what I expect out of them, and they keep delivering in each game. Genesee is a great program and they gave us a challenge today. We were tested and I'm very glad they came out on top. Connor Doogan (Belfast, Ireland), Josh Grace (Glasgow, Scotland), Michael Haskins (Belfast, Ireland) and Ashley Brown (Birmingham, England) all had an amazing game. The whole team did. I'm a very proud coach and they deserve to be 7-0 right now". The Spartans face Mid-State Conference rival, Finger Lakes Community College (6-3) on Saturday, and that game kicks off at 3:00pm at the FLCC campus. Let's Go Spartans!!!
