Cayuga’s Meier, Urquiza Named All-Americans

Awards are still piling up for Cayuga Community College's Men's Soccer Team, as two players on the 2018 Region III, Division B Champions have been named All-Americans.

Sophomore Spencer Urquiza and freshman Kent Meier were both voted Second-Team All-Americans for Division III in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), with Urquiza selected as a forward and Meier as a midfielder. They were also voted Second-Team East All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Spencer and Kent. They both had strong seasons, and they were key players in our team's success this season," said Cayuga Coach Chris Davison. "I know they worked hard in the offseason to prepare, so it's great to see them recognized for their talent and commitment."

Cayuga President Dr. Brian Durant congratulated Urquiza and Meier, saying the recognition for both players was well-deserved.

"Spencer and Kent had incredible seasons, and I know they were both significant contributors in our team's Region III championship," said Durant. "Congratulations again to Spencer and Kent for earning this great recognition and for their successful seasons as leaders on our Men's Soccer Team."

Playing his final season for the Spartans, Urquiza started 17 of Cayuga's 18 games, leading the team with 19 goals scored and tying for third with eight assists.

"Spencer had a great season, leading us in goals and being among our team leaders in assists," said Davison. "His season really couldn't have gone any better, both for him personally and how he helped our team as a whole."

Meier missed the team's first two games but still managed to finish with a team-leading 12 assists and tied for second in goals scored with 13.

"Kent missed our first few games, and I thought he might start a bit behind everyone else as a result, but he really had a great year. I'm looking forward to him being a leader on next season's team," said Davison.

The awards for Meier and Urquiza mark the second straight year that two Spartans have been named to the NJCAA's Division III All-American teams. In 2017, Ander Echaniz was named a First-Team All-American and Mike Abando a Second-Team All-American.
