Jefferson Outlasts Women’s Soccer 3-1

Jefferson Outlasts Women’s Soccer 3-1

The women's soccer team battled Jefferson to finish the first half in a scoreless tie…before yielding three second half goals and falling 3-1 to the Cannoneers in the Mid-State Athletic Conference contest at Emerson Field. Jefferson found the net early twice in the second half before Katie Byrnes (Jordan-Elbridge) scored on an assist from Brooke Mayville (Ontario, NY). The Spartans couldn't even the score despite some decent opportunities and hard work. The Cannoneers added a late goal to make the final 3-1.

Coach Renaud added…"Jefferson had the better of play in the match, but we had some real nice chances in both the first and second half of the match, we simply did not capitalize on them. Entering the break 0-0, could have been 1-0 for us, given the open goal chance we had at the 20 minute mark in the first half. The Jefferson striker carried the ball into goal uncontested on their first goal. We continue to have some breakdowns through the middle third of the field, leaving large gaps and easy counter attacks as the second half carried on.

"However, I am continually impressed with the team's attitude and focus on never giving up in a match, and our goal was a direct result of this. Brooke (Mayfield) hunted down the ball in our offensive third, pressing through their three back defenders, gaining possession and laying it off to Katie (Byrne), whose one timer was struck well enough to cross the line even after the Jefferson keeper was able to get a glove on it."

The Spartans are 1-1 in the Mid-State Conference and 1-4 overall…and travel next to Broome for their MSAC match on Saturday 9/15 at 1:00pm.
