Kats Take Down Lady Spartans

Kats Take Down Lady Spartans

The Lady Kats from Erie defeated the Spartans this afternoon by a count of the 4-1, leading to Cayuga's 8th straight loss on the season.

The Spartans, to their credit, once again played through the entire 90 minutes, shorthanded, resulting in a late goal to keep the clean sheet off the board for Kats goalie Madison Kiernan. Erie entered the break with a 1-0 lead on a 27th minute goal scored by Jasmine Wiggins. Wiggins would contirbute a second goal in the second half in the 24th minute, too. Allyson Wrazen put two into the net in the 42nd and 29th minute to round out the scoring for Erie. Marissa Seward (Walton, NY) recorded her first career goal on assist from fellow freshman Morgan Layton (Walton, NY) with 14 minutes remaining in the match. The Spartans carried the better of play in the final 20 minutes of the match, creating 5 quality scoring chances.

"I thought going into halftime only down a goal, we could make the necessary adjustments to get the equalizer and give us a chance to win the match. In the first minute of the second half, Brooke Mayville (Ontario, NY)  carried the middle third of the field, pushed passed the defenders and placed a perfect cross to the far post, we just missed on the chance," said Coach Renaud. Mayville would contribute another picture perfect cross late in the match on a corner kick, that again was just off the mark of an oncoming Spartan. "We are not a prolific scoring team, so when we do get the chances on frame we had today, our percentages have to be more in the range of 40% versus 10%."

"The fact we were able to break up the clean sheet late in the match, continues to show the fact the women continue to play through the entire match and not give up. At the conclusion of the match in our cool down session Coach Simmons and I expressed at this juncture in the season we cannot worry about the wins and losses, but should be focusing on continued improved play, which I thought we did today. I thought Erin Butler (Walton, NY) had a phenomenal game this afternoon, as did Brooke Mayville and Bre Becker (Lusby, MD)."

The Spartans next match is this Saturday 10/6, home against SUNY Delhi at 1 p.m.
