Leading scorers on the men's and women's basketball teams for Cayuga Community College were voted to the All-Conference Team for the Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC).
Guard Messiah Brown and point guard Erica Helzer were both recognized for stellar 2018-2019 seasons, with MSAC coaches voting each to the All-Conference Team. Brown was also named third-team All-Region for Region III of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Brown finished ninth nationally among all NJCAA Division III players with 23.4 points per game, a mark that also led the Spartans for the 2018-2019 season. He also finished the season with a free throw percentage of 85.5, fifth-best nationally among NJCAA Division III players.
A sophomore from Bronx who is majoring in Criminal Justice, Brown finished his Cayuga career with 934 points.
"Messiah had a tremendous career at Cayuga, and his 934 points is the most scored in my 10 years of coaching the Spartans," said Coach Tony Borges. "He worked hard all season, and he deserved to be recognized on the All-Conference and Region III teams."
A sophomore from Port Byron who is majoring in Business Administration, Helzer started all 22 games for the Spartans, leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. She finished the season averaging 14.8 points, 3.6 assists and 4 steals per game, and was also third on the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.
Helzer finished her two seasons at Cayuga with 501 career points.
"Erica had a great season and a great career at Cayuga. She was a strong leader for us, and was always focused on helping our team and her teammates reach their goals," said Coach Jim Alberici. "She was very deserving of this honor, and I'm happy she was named to the All-Conference Team."
