The Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball Team wasn't able to take advantage of a strong start Wednesday, losing at home to Jefferson Community College.

Despite playing a strong first half, the Spartans went cold from the field in the second half and lost 75-64 to the Cannoneers (14-6, 5-2), who won both match-ups this season. The loss drops Cayuga to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference.

"The first 17 minutes or so were great — we were shooting well and playing great defense. But we didn't rebound or shoot free throws well enough to win tonight," said Cayuga Coach Tony Borges.

Led on offense by Deonte Holder's 13 points and nine points from Scott Minnoe, Cayuga led for almost the entire first half. Jefferson, though, closed the half on a 17-4 run to lead 41-38 at the break.

Jefferson slowly built the lead in the second half as Cayuga struggled offensively, scoring only 26 points in the second half.

Holder finished with 18 points, while Minnoe and Shaheed Alcide each finished with 11 points. Alcide added 10 rebounds, and Stanley Beato had 10 points and six rebounds.

The Spartans will hit the road for an away game at SUNY Broome (6-16, 1-6) on Saturday, Feb. 8. Cayuga came back to defeat Broome 85-71 earlier this season. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
