Spartans Fall to Lazers in Regular Season Finale

The Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball Team dropped its final game of the regular season Tuesday to the nationally-ranked squad from Onondaga Community College.

The Spartans stuck with Onondaga in a competitive first two quarters, but the Lazers (25-3, 12-0) pulled away after halftime for a 113-73 win.

Cayuga trailed by only four points at the end of the first quarter, but the Lazers launched a 20-5 run early in the second quarter to take a 41-22 lead. The Spartans fought back to close the quarter on a 21-9 run, relying primarily on three-pointers from Fatimaah Findley, and trailed 52-43 at the break.

The Lazers took control in the third quarter, starting the frame on a 17-5 run that the Spartans couldn't overcome.

"We played well in the first half. We were having trouble stopping them, but they were having trouble stopping us too. It just got away from us in the second half," said Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici.

Findley led Cayuga with 25 points, including eight three-pointers. Forward Gretchen Earl had 12 points, Allaysha Grady and Jania Freeman had nine points each, Tori Mandel had eight points and Tanyea Jansson finished with seven points. The Spartans finished with a season-high 13 three-pointers.

Cayuga closes the regular season with an 8-15 record and a 4-8 mark in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. The Spartans will learn whether they make the Region III postseason in the next few days. Playoffs begin this weekend.
