Despite a strong start, the Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball Team couldn't overcome turnovers and a strong Onondaga Community College team on Tuesday.

The Spartans raced out to an early lead and led for much of the first half, but the nationally-ranked Lazers (24-3, 12-0) were ultimately too strong, winning 86-59 and sweeping the season series.

Cayuga built an early nine-point lead and led until Onondaga took a one-point lead with four minutes remaining in the first half. The Lazers closed the first half on a 14-4 run to lead 32-25 at the break.

"We played a great first half except for the turnovers. I thought we executed our game plan in the first half to try to slow the pace down some," said Cayuga Coach Tony Borges.

The Lazers controlled the second half, taking advantage of Cayuga turnovers and opening on a 9-2 run. The Spartans cut the margin to 45-37 at the 12-minute mark, but the Lazers went on an 18-6 run to rebuild the lead.

Deonte Holder led the Spartans with 15 points, Scott Minnoe finished with 13 points, Stanley Beato had 11 points and Isaiah Landres had 10 points.

The loss drops the Spartans' regular season record to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Cayuga will learn this week whether they reach the Region III postseason. Playoffs begin this weekend.
