Spartans Split with #9 Generals

Cayuga Community College Baseball used a seven-run third inning in the second game Monday to earn a road split with #9 Herkimer College.

The Spartans' seventh-inning rally fell short in a 4-3 loss in the opener, but Cayuga responded with an 8-4 win in the nightcap over the Generals. The Spartans improved to 16-12 on the season and 11-5 in East Division play.

In the opener, Cayuga scored once in the fourth inning on a groundout by Perry Chetney, but trailed 4-1 in the seventh. The Spartans put two runners on, with Juan Perez scoring on a groundout by Luca D'Emilio and Chetney scoring on a single by Kevin Dolan, but they were unable to score the tying run.

Five different Spartans collected hits in the contest, with Alex Gaudet going one-for-three with a run and Chetney going one-for-two with a run and RBI.

In the second game Cayuga broke a scoreless tie in the third with seven runs, starting with a bases-loaded, two-run single by Gaudet. Later in the inning, two runners scored on a Herkimer error, then Jean-Paul Anthony's two-run single made it 7-0. The Generals threatened in the fifth, but reliever Brantley Griggs pitched out of the jam and threw two more scoreless innings.

Gaudet went two-for-three with three RBI and a run, and Dolan went two-for-three with a run. Anthony had a run scored and two RBI, and Yoldi Soriano scored twice. Austin Doyle-Miller got the win for Cayuga, surrendering one run in four innings.

Cayuga is home for a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 1, to host Onondaga Community College, then is on the road Thursday, May 2, at Corning Community College. The home doubleheader against OCC starts at 3 p.m.
