Spartans Take 2 From Red Barons

Cayuga Community College Baseball swept a road doubleheader against Corning Community College on Thursday, with key contributions coming from most of the Spartans' lineup.

Cayuga controlled both contests against the Red Barons, pounding out 15 hits in a 12-1 opening win, then registering 11 more hits in an 8-3 win in the second game. The conference wins move the Spartans to 19-13 overall and 11-3 in Mid-State Athletic Conference competition.

The Spartans didn't trail in either game and scored quickly in the opening contest on a sacrifice fly by Bradley Soto-Diaz. They broke the game open with a five-run third inning, with RBI hits from Alex Gaudet, Kevin Dolan, Juan Perez and Luca D'Emilio. Brandon Hoftijzer smashed his first homer of the season as part of a three-run fifth inning, and Cayuga tacked on two more in the sixth to end the scoring on an RBI double from Michael Blowers and a sacrifice fly by Perry Chetney.

Gaudet went three-for-four with three runs scored, and Dolan was two-for-four with two RBI and also scored twice. D'Emilio and Michael DeRosa each had two hits, and Hoftijzer had two runs scored and two RBI. Wyatt Ernst surrendered only five hits in six innings, striking out two.

In the second game, seven Spartans pitchers combined to hold the Red Barons to just three hits. At the plate, Cayuga again scored in the first, this time on Perez's RBI double. They tacked on three more in the third, with RBIs from Soto-Diaz, Perez and Yoldi Soriano. Chetney again closed the scoring in the seventh, this time with his team-leading fourth homer of the season.

Gaudet again went three-for-four with three runs scored, and Dolan went two-for-two and scored twice. Soto-Diaz, Chetney and Perez had two RBI apiece, with Soto-Diaz also scoring twice.

Cayuga hosts its final doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday, May 4, against Mohawk Valley Community College. First pitch at Falcon Park is scheduled for noon.
