Spartans Dominate in Sweep

Cayuga Community College Baseball scored 28 runs and freshmen Kyle Peryer and James MacLean earned their first collegiate wins in a home sweep over Corning Community College on Thursday.
 
The Spartans trailed briefly in the opener before scoring 16 straight runs in a 16-5 win, then finished the day with a 12-2 win in the second game. They're now 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in Mid-State Athletic Conference competition.
 
Corning scored three unearned runs in the first inning of the opener, but the Spartans responded with three in the bottom half of the inning. Cayuga added three more in the second, with RBI singles coming from Kevin Dolan, Mike DeRosa, and Jacob Laird. While Peryer held the Red Barons at bay, the Spartans' scored five runs each in the third and fourth innings. Laird and Jeremy Recio each drove-in two runs in the third, and Dolan drove-in two in the fourth.
 
Peryer scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in a complete game win while striking out five. Dolan, DeRosa, Laird and Recio each had at least two hits, DeRosa had four RBI, and Dolan and Recio had three RBI. Dolan and Owen Browne scored three runs, and three other Spartans scored twice.
 
In the second game, Cayuga scored 10 runs in the first three innings. Isaac Allison's two-RBI single in the first gave the Spartans the lead, then singles by Recio and Laird in the second inning helped build a 7-1 advantage. Todd Brandl drove-in two runs in the third, then the Spartans added two more in the fifth on sacrifice flies from Laird and Michael Blowers.
 
MacLean allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, and Antonio Munoz had four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Recio had three hits and four runs, Laird had three RBI, and Brandl, Dolan and Alejandro Diaz scored twice.
 
Cayuga is on the road Sunday, March 16, at Onondaga Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
