Spartans Take 2 from Timberwolves
Cayuga Community College Baseball earned a pair of one-run home victories on Sunday, including a walk-off victory in the nightcap against SUNY Adirondack.
The Spartans staged rallies to take both halves of the doubleheader at Falcon Park, coming away with wins of 4-3 and 5-4. The sweep improves their record to 15-7 on the season and 6-4 in East Division play.
In the opener, Cayuga trailed 2-0 before a four-run fourth inning proved the difference. The Spartans got on the board when Luca D'Emilio drew a bases-loaded walk before Isaac Allison's two-run single gave them a one-run lead. Jakson Ross singled home the final run of the inning to make it 4-2. The Timberwolves scored once in the fifth, but reliever Dylan Gordon pitched the Spartans out of a jam then threw scoreless sixth and seventh innings for the save.
Andrew Seward earned the win for Cayuga, throwing 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Allison finished with a run, two hits and two RBI, and Jeremy Recio, Antonio Munoz and Alejandro Diaz scored once.
In the second game, Cayuga trailed 4-2 when they tallied three in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win. Kevin Dolan and Ross singled, then Mike DeRosa was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Recio smashed a double score Dolan and Ross and tie the game. The Timberwolves elected to intentionally walk Munoz to load the bases and create a force-out opportunity, but Diaz was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, scoring DeRosa and giving the Spartans the 5-4 win.
Recio finished with four hits, two doubles and two RBI, Diaz had two hits and a double, and Jacob Laird had two hits and two RBI. Ashtyn Traugott-Knoll got the win for the Spartans, throwing 2 2/3 innings in relief and striking out three.
The Spartans are on the road at SUNY Adirondack on Thursday, April 3. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
