Cayuga Claims MSAC Title; 5 Spartans Earn Conference Honors

Cayuga Community College Baseball earned its third Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) title this spring, and right fielder Jeremy Recio was named Conference Player of the Year.
The Spartans, with a 14-4 MSAC record, defeated runner-up Genesee Community College (17-5) by just .005 percentage points to earn their third conference crown in the past four seasons. Finger Lakes Community College, who the Spartans play this weekend in the Region III playoffs, finished third with a 16-6 conference mark.
Postseason accolades also rolled in for individual players on the Spartans roster, with Recio being named All-Conference and Player of the Year. The freshman right fielder was one of the best hitters in the conference, batting .459 with 50 RBI, 37 runs scored, 14 stolen bases, eight triples and two home runs.
Sophomore first baseman Michael DeRosa and freshman pitcher Kyle Peryer were also named All-Conference after stellar seasons. 
 
A two-year starter for Cayuga, DeRosa batted third for most of the year and finished the regular season with a .394 average, 39 RBI and 30 runs scored. Peryer was one of the most reliable starting pitchers in the conference, tying for the conference lead with seven wins and finishing with an MSAC-best five complete games.
Two other Spartans, left fielder Luca D'Emilio and catcher Jakson Ross, were also named MSAC Honorable Mention.
D'Emilio, a sophomore, batted .364 with 29 RBI and 31 runs scored, and finished the regular season with a perfect fielding percentage. Ross batted .347 for Cayuga with 30 runs scored while leading the team with 18 stolen bases.
The Spartans start the postseason Saturday as the third seed from Region III's East Division, and will be on the road against Finger Lakes Community College, the second seed from the West Division. First pitch in the best-of-three series is scheduled for 1 p.m.
