Cayuga Community College's Clay Target team completed its regular season earlier this week and is looking ahead to the nationals on Nov. 5.

The Spartans shook off the cold and wind on Sunday to post another round of strong scores in Week 5, with Hunter Kot and Nolan Coningsby both hitting the 40-target mark.

Looking back on the regular season, Coach Shea Beachner said the entire team improved in different skill areas. She added that each player completed rounds where they scored over 20 out of 25 at some point during the season.

"The students have grown throughout the season, not just as shooters but also as being part of a team. We were challenged this year because each Sunday when we competed we had rain, strong winds, or both," she said. "For some of our team, they've had the opportunity to experience this sport for the first time. It's something they were curious about, and they loved it."

Scores from Sunday are:

Week 5

Hunter Kot: 41 of 50 targets

Nolan Coningsby: 40 of 50

Shawn Cornell: 38 of 50

Dylan Bull: 34 of 50

Darwin Warner: 32 of 50

Kyle Wise: 29 of 50

Cayuga competes against seven other teams: Concordia University, Dakota College at Bottineau, Ferris State University, Illinois College, Jefferson Community College, Northeastern Junior College and Maine Maritime College.

Teams shoot competitively once a week, with results accumulated throughout the week as each team files scores.

The national competition is on Nov. 5, with shooters competing out of 100 targets.
