Spartans Win Road Game At SUNY Broome

With weather delaying the second half of the season, the Cayuga Men's Basketball Team finally got on the court in January and wasted no time notching their first win of 2019 with a road victory at SUNY Broome.

After having two games postponed due to inclement weather, the Spartans relied on a stingy first-half defense and a trio of high-scorers to defeat the Hornets 91-75. The win put Cayuga's record at 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. 

"We really played well, and picking up that first conference win is always great," said Spartans Coach Tony Borges. "All year we've stressed the importance of playing great defense, and I think we saw the caliber of defense we're capable of playing in the first half."

Cayuga held the Hornets to just 27 first-half points, coasting into halftime with a 13-point lead. Both teams picked up the offense in the second half, but Cayuga was able to build on its lead and secured the victory by a comfortable 16-point margin.

Three Spartans players scored at least 20 points, with Stanley Beato and Messiah Brown both scoring 25 and Javon Coleman scoring 20 and securing 14 rebounds. Sequan Hicks scored 12 for the Spartans, and Mekai Dare grabbed 11 boards.

The Spartans dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds, shot 47 percent from the three-point line and made 18 of 24 free throws.

Borges said the team has done a great job fighting through adversity this season, with the team currently missing a few players and finding it hard to get into a rhythm as the winter weather has wreaked havoc on their schedule.

"Even with all the postponed games and practices, we really came out and played strong. We didn't shoot the ball great, and we need to continue cutting down on our turnovers, but our defense and rebounding were excellent. We can build on that moving forward," he said.

Cayuga has three games coming up in four days, traveling to Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Jan. 23, hosting North Country Community College on Jan. 24, and traveling to Onondaga Community College on Jan. 26.
