Spartans Drop Road Contest to Red Barons
Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball couldn't quite complete a second-half comeback on Saturday and lost their first road contest of the season.
Trailing Corning Community College by double digits in the second half, the Spartans cut the lead to two points late in the game before losing 83-78. The loss to the Red Barons leaves the Spartans 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference competition.
In a fast-paced start, the Spartans trailed early but tied the game at 17 on a jumper by forward Tony Borges. The Red Barons then went on a 15-2 run to pull away from Cayuga before the Spartans responded with a 16-8 run to end the half trailing 40-35.
Corning ran out nine straight points to start the second half and rebuild their double-digit lead. The Spartans steadily chipped away at the Red Barons' advantage over the final 10 minutes, with guard Wylik Coleman narrowing the lead to 77-74 on a layup and then making it 78-76 seconds later with two free throws. That was as close as the Spartans would get to catching Corning in the closing seconds, though.
Coleman ended the game with 20 points and nine rebounds, and Borges had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Christian Gomez had 15 points for the Spartans, Gerod Jackson had eight rebounds, and Rashawn Williams had nine points.
The Spartans are home Wednesday, Nov. 13, to host Finger Lakes Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
