Wylik Coleman scores the go-ahead layup in Cayuga's win over Jefferson. He finished with 19 points.
A late layup by Wylik Coleman and clutch free throws by Christian Gomez and Solomon Mitchell helped Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball earn their second win on Wednesday.

After losing a halftime lead over the Cannoneers, the Spartans rallied in the final minutes to come away with an 83-80 win. The victory makes them 2-2 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference and 2-4 in Region III play.

Cayuga built an early first-half lead with Coleman leading on the offensive end and a defense that limited the Cannoneers to just 34 points in the frame. The teams were tied with less than three minutes before halftime, but a put-back by Rian Hall and back-to-back field goals by Amaree Samuel gave Cayuga a 38-34 lead.

The Cannoneers took the lead early in the second half, and held a single-digit advantage for much of the frame. The Spartans trailed by seven with eight minutes left, but tied the game at 70 on a three-pointer by Jorge Jimenez and then tied it again at 76 on a Tony Borges' layup.

After a Cannoneers' three-pointer made it 79-76 with 2:40 remaining, Samuel sank a jumper in the paint to cut the lead to one. The Spartans held the Cannoneers, and Coleman's layup put them ahead 80-79. Gomez and Mitchell sank three free throws in the final seconds to ensure the win.

Coleman finished with 19 points, and Borges had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Gomez had 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds, and Samuel finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Hall, Jimenez and Gerod Jackson combined for 15 points off the bench.

The Spartans are home Saturday, Nov. 23, against Erie Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
