Cayuga Golfers Headed To National Tournament
Accolades keep piling up for the Cayuga Men's Golf Team, as the Spartans proved themselves one of the top teams in the area with a strong showing at the Regional Tournament.
The Spartans overcame horrific spring weather to finish second in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Tournament earlier this week at Timber Banks Golf Course in Baldwinsville. The second-place showing qualified Cayuga to compete at the upcoming National Tournament at Chautauqua Golf Club in Mayville, NY.
It's been an incredible season for the Spartans, who won the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship and finished second in scoring in Region III with a team scoring average of 325.88.
The Spartans won four tournaments in the regular season and never finished lower than second place.
"It's really been a great season so far. I'm proud of how everyone has played, improved and competed at these tournaments," said Coach Steve Leary. "As a team and as individuals, we've played well and deserve the opportunity to compete at Nationals. I know everyone is looking forward to it."
Hunter Hubel tied for second at the Region III tournament, finishing just a single stroke off the lead. Hubel was one of three Spartans named to the All-Region Team, along with Ryan Chalupnicki and E.J. Townsend. Chalupnicki finished tied for 10that the Regional Tournament, and Townsend finished tied for 14th.
Hubel had the lowest scoring average in the region for the regular season, with Townsend having the seventh- and Chalupnicki the ninth-lowest scoring average, respectively.
Along with Hubel, Chalupnicki and Townsend, Cody Helmer and John Rice complete Cayuga's National Tournament-bound team, with Matt Micglire as the team's first alternate.
The Spartans will play a practice round at the Chautauqua course on June 3 before the National Tournament begins on June 4. Players will finish four rounds, with the final round scheduled for June 7.
