Cayuga Community College Men's Soccer knocked off preseason #5 Genesee Community College in an away match Wednesday to launch their 2024 season.
The Spartans, who enter the season coming off an 11-win 2023, controlled both halves of the contest against the Cougars. Cayuga scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 win.
The teams were evenly matched through the first 30 minutes of play before the Spartans capitalized on a scoring opportunity. A centering pass from the left sideline by Cayuga's Jordan Mati found Joseph Edet in front of the net, where Edet knocked in the Spartans' first goal of 2024.
Holding the 1-0 advantage at the break, the Spartans widened their lead only four minutes into the second half. Edet controlled a header from Hayden Poole, putting the ball past a defender and the Cougars' keeper to make it 2-0 Cayuga.
The Spartans' defense was stout throughout the first half and remained so in the second stanza, holding off several Genesee scoring chances in the final minutes to preserve the win.
Cayuga is back at Falcon Park for their first home contest of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 4, against Jefferson Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
