Cayuga Community College captured their first home game of the 2024 season Wednesday in a hard-fought contest against previously undefeated Jefferson Community College.
The Spartans tallied three goals in the first half, then relied on a stingy defense to slow the Cannoneers and ensure their second shutout victory of the season. The 3-0 win moved Cayuga to 2-0 on the season, with both wins coming in Mid-State Athletic Conference competition.
Cayuga got on the board halfway through the first half after an even start during which Spartans goalie Major Evans turned away two Cannoneers shots. Jake Botteril's pass to a sliding Reece Harper in front of the net put the Spartans up 1-0, then just minutes later Harper scored again on an assist from Charlie Piper. Botteril closed the scoring late in the first half on a penalty kick.
Wednesday's win comes one day after the Spartans entered the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III rankings at #6 following last week's win over then-#5 Genesee Community College.
Cayuga is on the road for two contests this weekend, traveling to North Country Community College for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, September 7. A day later they travel to Clinton Community College for a noon kickoff.
