Reece Harper's goal in the final minutes broke the second tie of the match and gave Cayuga Community College Men's Soccer a dramatic win Wednesday at Falcon Park.
With the #3 Spartans and #7 Onondaga Community College tied at 2, Harper knocked in the game-winning goal on an assist from Bigad Sid with just four minutes remaining, giving Cayuga a 3-2 win. The win is Cayuga's third over a top-10 team this season, with previous victories over ranked teams coming against Genesee Community College and Mohawk Valley Community College.
Cayuga had two leads earlier in the match, but both times the Lazers came back to tie the score. In the first half, Sid smashed in a goal with just over 18 minutes remaining to make it 1-0 Cayuga. The Spartans held the lead until closer to halftime, when the Lazers slipped in a goal to tie the match at the break.
In the second half, Cayuga's Jordan Mati scored on a pass from Harper, putting the Spartans up again. Cayuga turned away several Lazers scoring tries, but with less than six minutes remaining Onondaga scored on a cornerkick to knot the score at 2.
Cayuga immediately resumed their attack after the Lazers tied the match, with Harper scoring the deciding goal just 90 seconds later.
Harper and Sid both had a goal and an assist in the win, Mati had a goal and Will Fearon had the third assist for Cayuga.
The Spartans improve to 9-0 on the season, with all their wins coming in Region III play. They're home both days this weekend, hosting SUNY Adirondack at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, and Hudson Valley Community College at noon on Sunday, Sept. 29.
