Spartans Earn First Home Win Behind Late Scoring Run
A scoring run in the final four minutes gave Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball their first home win of the season Tuesday.
The Spartans trailed Corning Community College by three with four minutes left, but baskets by Haley Mosch and Lexi Alberici gave Cayuga a 43-39 win. Cayuga is now 2-4 on the season and 1-4 in Region III competition.
Coach Jim Alberici credited the Spartans' defense for helping the team earn its first conference and regional win of the season.
"Our defense was tremendous tonight. Corning has some good players, so to hold them to 39 points is great," he said. "This is a big win for us, to come back and make some plays down the stretch in the fourth quarter."
Both teams struggled on the offensive end and relied on their defense in the first two quarters. The Red Barons held a one-point lead after the opening frame, but strong shooting from Mosch and Alberici gave the Spartans an 18-15 lead at halftime.
The offenses for both teams picked up in the third and fourth quarters. Corning came back to tie the game at 28 going into the fourth quarter, and the teams traded the lead throughout the opening minutes of the frame. Three-pointers from Alberici and Maddy Weed gave the Spartans temporary leads, but the Red Barons led 37-34 with 3:45 left.
Cayuga started their late rally with a layup by Mosch and another three-pointer from Alberici, making it 39-37 Spartans. Mosch's and-one gave Cayuga a five-point lead they wouldn't relinquish in the final minutes.
Mosch had 20 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks, Alberici added 13 points, and Avrey Colton finished with six points, three assists, and 10 rebounds.
The Spartans are home for a non-regional contest against Roberts Wesleyan University's JV team on Thursday, Nov. 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
