Spartans Earn Third Straight Win
Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball made it three wins in a row with a dominant road win over Genesee Community College on Saturday.
The Spartans' defense again controlled the game, allowing fewer than 10 points in three separate quarters on their way to a 51-26 win over the Cougars. The win is Cayuga's fourth in five games and makes them 4-4 on the season.
Another outstanding effort on defense, excellent ball movement and balanced scoring are all signs the team is headed in the right direction, said Coach Jim Alberici.
"We had three wins this week and averaged allowing 32 points. For college basketball, that's outstanding," he said. "Today we had 16 assists on 19 baskets, and four players finished with nine points or more. When you move the ball like that and have that kind of balance, it's very hard to defend against."
The teams traded the lead early before Cayuga closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Haley Mosch to make it 12-6. The Spartans remained in control in the second quarter, limiting Genesee to just two points. On the offensive end, two three-pointers from Maddy Weed and another from Lexi Alberici made it 24-8 at the break.
Cayuga opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run behind baskets from Alberici and Avrey Colton and led by 20 after the frame. Their defense stayed in control in the fourth quarter to prevent a comeback by the Cougars.
Colton led Cayuga with 12 points, adding four assists and six rebounds. Alberici finished with 11 points, four steals and three rebounds, and Weed had nine points on three-of-three shooting from three-point range. Mosch had a game-high 15 rebounds and eight assists, adding nine points, four blocks and four steals, and Lamontiona Johnson finished with 11 rebounds.
The Spartans are on the road Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Onondaga Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
