Spartans End Fall Semester With Road Loss
Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball lost its final game of the fall semester Friday to Roberts Wesleyan University's JV team.
The Spartans overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half of the game but failed to score in the final minutes, losing 59-51. Cayuga closes the opening semester of the season with a 4-6 record and a 2-4 mark in Region III play.
"It's disappointing to end the semester on a loss, but there were a lot of positives in the game. We played hard, and we were down 13 but fought back in the third and fourth quarters to take the lead," said Coach Jim Alberici. "We played well and had a chance to win. I'm proud of their effort."
The teams battled to a 13-13 tie in the first quarter, but the Spartans trailed 29-24 at the break. Cayuga struggled coming out of the gate in the third quarter and fell behind 41-28.
The Spartans rebounded with a 20-3 run across the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters to build a 48-44 lead. Knotted at 51 with just under two minutes left, the Red Hawks hit a three followed by another basket to take the lead. Cayuga was unable to come back in the final minute.
Avrey Colton led Cayuga with 15 points, adding nine rebounds and six steals. Lamontiona Johnson posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Haley Mosch had 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
The Spartans' first game in the spring semester is at Herkimer College on Jan. 13. The teams played earlier this year at Spartan Hall, with the Generals picking up a 63-39 win.
