Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball earned its first win of the season Wednesday in a hard-fought home contest against SUNY Broome.
The Spartans held a slight lead for most of the game, relying on their defense to hold the Hornets in check before knocking down late free throws to secure the 37-33 win. Cayuga improves to 1-1 on the season, with Wednesday's win counting toward their Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference record.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the Spartans had an off-night from the field, but played well defensively and sank clutch free throws in the closing seconds.
"We found a way to win. Clearly we didn't play as well as we're capable of, but we made five free throws down the stretch. That was the difference between winning and losing," he said. "We didn't shoot great, but then to go five of six in the last 30 seconds was a credit to our team."
Both teams struggled from the field for much of the contest, but Cayuga forward Xavia Evener paced the Spartans' offense in the first two quarters. Evener had 12 points at halftime, with Savanna Murray adding four more to put the Spartans ahead 16-14 at the break.
The Hornets stayed with the Spartans throughout the third and fourth quarters, pulling even several times in the final frame. In the final 30 seconds, Spartans sophomore guards Lexi Alberici and Haley Mosch and freshman guard Morgan Jones sank five free throws to put the game away for Cayuga.
Evener finished the game with 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Spartans. Mosch had nine points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had five assists. Alberici had seven steals, and Murray had seven points and two three-pointers.
Cayuga's next game is on the road against conference and regional foe Corning Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Nov. 9.
