Solid first and second quarters weren't enough for Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball to earn their first road win against Corning Community College on Saturday.

The Spartans trailed by four at halftime, but tough third and fourth quarters left them on the wrong end of a 69-37 final. Cayuga is now 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference play.

Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the team played well early and was better on the offensive end of the floor than they were earlier this week in a win over SUNY Broome.

"I thought we played very well in the first and second quarters. We were only down four at halftime, but the game got away from us in the third quarter. But our effort was good. We'll regroup and be ready for our next game," he said.

The Spartans and Red Barons traded three-pointers early in the game, with Cayuga's Lexi Alberici sinking a pair of threes as the Spartans grabbed a two-point lead halfway through the first quarter. Cayuga was behind by three at the end of the first quarter and kept the game close in the second, trailing only 28-24 at halftime.

The Red Barons controlled the third and fourth quarters, as the Spartans struggled with turnovers and missed free throws. Cayuga trailed by double digits entering the fourth quarter and was unable to narrow Corning's lead.

Alberici led the Spartans with 11 points, adding five assists and three steals. Haley Mosch had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Savanna Murray had seven points and two blocks.

Cayuga is back home Wednesday, Nov. 13, against Finger Lakes Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
