Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball couldn't overcome a fourth-quarter rally from Finger Lakes Community College on Wednesday.
The Spartans held a slim lead going into the final frame, but the Lakers came away with a 51-47 road win. Cayuga is now 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference competition.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the Spartans played well offensively for most of the game, and praised the team's effort rebounding and on the defensive end.
"We scored 47 points, that's the most we've scored. The second quarter was the best we've played offensively this season, I think. But we still had one quarter where we only scored five. We've got to figure out how to play a full 40 minutes and be more consistent," said Alberici.
After a slow first quarter that saw the Spartans net only five points, Cayuga started pushing the ball into the post for Haley Mosch and Xavia Evener. The pair responded by scoring a combined 21 of Cayuga's 23 points in the first two quarters, and the Spartans held a 23-19 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw more of the same from Cayuga, with Mosch and Evener combining for eight more points and leading the Spartans to a 34-31 lead going into the fourth. The Lakers, though, took a small lead several minutes into the quarter. Cayuga reclaimed the advantage on an and-one by Sierra Murray, but Finger Lakes responded with two baskets to go up 42-40.
In the final minutes, an and-one by Lexi Alberici, free throws by Jada Smith and a jumper by Murray kept the Spartans close. Trailing by three with less than 30 seconds to play, the Spartans missed a pair of three-point attempts before the Lakers sank a late free-throw to go up four and secure the win.
Mosch had 17 points and 18 rebounds for the Spartans, and Evener had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Murray had eight points and five rebounds, and Alberici had 11 assists.
Cayuga is home on Saturday, Nov. 16, against Herkimer College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
