Solid first and second quarters weren't enough for Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball to upset #11 Jefferson Community College on Wednesday.
The Spartans led after the opening frame and trailed by single digits at halftime, but ultimately fell at home to the Cannoneers by a 66-45 final.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the Spartans played well, particularly in the opening quarters against one of the top teams in Region III.
"I'm really proud of our effort against a team that made it to nationals last year. We came up with a plan to handle their zone press, and we did a nice job executing that," he said. "I'm hoping we can build on that and be ready for our game Saturday."
In the first quarter, the Spartans knotted the score at seven on a Lexi Alberici layup, then back-to-back three-pointers by Haley Mosch gave the Spartans a 13-12 lead later in the frame. Cayuga carried a two-point lead going into the second quarter before Jefferson took a slim lead and banked in a three before half to go up 31-22.
In the third and fourth quarters, the Spartans continued to play hard against the Cannoneers' press, but Jefferson pulled further away from Cayuga.
Alberici, Mosch and forward Xavia Evener led the Spartans' attack, with Mosch finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. Evener had nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, and Alberici had 13 points, five assists and two steals. Sierra Murray also grabbed nine rebounds.
Cayuga is home on Saturday, Nov. 23, against Erie Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
