Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball started 2025 with a home win over Tompkins Cortland Community College on Saturday.

The Spartans took the lead in the first quarter and held it the rest of the game, defeating the Panthers 60-46. The win, which counts for Cayuga's Region III record and its mark in the Mid-State Athletic Conference, lifts the Spartans to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said he was excited with how the Spartans played, particularly as Saturday's contest was the team's first since early December.

"We shot well and moved the ball very well. We had 14 assists on 23 made baskets, which means we were sharing the ball and getting easier shots because of it," he said. "We were playing well in December, so I'm glad to see that it carried over to today's game."

The Spartans built a four-point lead in the first quarter and increased their advantage in the second frame to lead 32-23 at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Spartans take complete control of the contest. Guards Haley Mosch and Lexi Alberici and forward Xavia Evener paced Cayuga's offense, and the Spartans' defense limited the Panthers to eight points in the quarter. Cayuga held a 19-point lead going into the fourth quarter, an advantage they held the rest of the way.

Mosch led Cayuga with 22 points and added 11 rebounds, and Evener had 17 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks. Alberici finished with 11 points, seven assists and three steals.

Cayuga's next game is home on Sunday, January 19, against North Country Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
