Spartan Men's Soccer Comes Up Short

The Spartan men's soccer team picked up their first loss of the season against Mohawk Valley Community College. Both teams entered the contest unbeaten going into the match.. The fast pace game had lots of action in both attacking halves of the pitch, but MVCC got on the scoring sheet early with a goal in the 29th minute from a free kick taken just outside the box over keeper Sean Dockrell's (Malahide, Ireland) head into the side netting. The Spartans kept their heads up and pushed the Mohawk defense with Bruno Gaudie-Ley (Rio, Brazil), and Mario Paiva (Rio, Brazil) combining for 7 shots in the first half, one of those shots from Bruno Gaudie-Ley coming close and hitting the crossbar. Mohawk held a 1-0 halftime advantage.

During the second half, the Cayuga men battled hard, but it was Mohawk scoring 3 unanswered goals, with the last coming in the 57th minute. Mario Paiva came close to finding the back of the net in the 85th minute with a shot just bouncing off the post. Sean Dockrell (Malahide, Ireland) recorded 6 saves and the Spartans had a total of 15 shots in the game.

Coach Darren Wynne commented following the game... "I thought we played well, and I thought the score line didn't do us justice in how well we did play. We came close to scoring a couple of times, but that's soccer for you. I did commend our players for keeping their heads in the game and battling for the entire 90 minutes. We just have to regroup and get focused for Thursday's 9/15 road game against Jefferson at the Fairgrounds in Watertown."
