Cayuga Gets Gritty 1-0 Win Over Onondaga

Syracuse, N.Y. - Onondaga Community College hosted the Spartan Men's soccer team today at the David W. Murphy field on the campus of OCC.

The Spartan men kicked off the Mid-state Athletic Conference game going from left to right, taking advantage of the wind in the first half.  The game started quickly with both teams trying to establish possession, and find their form. Cayuga found the majority of the possession in the first half, and getting on the score sheet early with good combination work between Sean Richards (Cardiff, Wales), Chris Davison (Newcastle, England) and Michael Haskins (Belfast, Ireland). Richards played the ball into Davison's feet, and Davison flicked the ball into the on running Haskins, where put the ball into the top left corner, past the OCC keeper to put Cayuga ahead 1-0 before the half.

The score line stayed the same with OCC pushing hard for an equalizer throughout the second half, but the Spartan men held strong to win 1-0 to stay undefeated on the season so far.

Coach Wynne reflected on the game with these comments, " I thought the start of the game was very sloppy with the wind being a big part of that. The team responded well after about 20 minutes in, and started to find their form and possession in keeping the ball. We tweaked a few things before half time and that settled us a little better, and that gave us enough room to break through OCC's defense to go up 1-0. I thought OCC fought really well and gave us a very good game. Defensively I thought we were much more organized in the second half then in previous games and we are happy to take the W in this big clash".

The Spartan men's soccer team goes to 3-0 for the opening week of the season and faces Niagara Community College on Saturday, September 13th at 3:00 PM, at Emerson Park in Auburn N.Y.
