Spartans Suffer First Loss of Season

Cayuga Community College Men's Soccer suffered their first loss of the 2023 season Monday in a home match against Mohawk Valley Community College.

Playing the #5 team in the nation, the #9 Spartans led briefly but fell behind in the first period and were unable to catch the Hawks, losing 5-3. Cayuga is now 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in regional competition.

Cayuga scored early on a penalty kick by Rafferty Campbell, but the Spartans trailed 3-1 late in the first period when the Spartans' Jake Botterill scored to cut the lead at the half to 3-2. The Hawks' lead grew to 5-2 in the second period before Botterill scored his second goal of the match.

Along with the goals by Botterill and Campbell, the Spartans' Raffaele Mathews, Joe Davison and Olivier Platenburg finished with assists.

Cayuga is back home Wednesday to host Niagara County Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Falcon Park.
