Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball played a strong first half but couldn't keep pace in the final two quarters with Jefferson Community College on Monday.

The Spartans and Cannoneers were tied at halftime in a defensive contest, but Jefferson pulled away in the third and fourth quarters to win 65-43. Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici praised the Spartans' effort and said they played well defensively, but a difficult third quarter hurt their chances of picking up the road win.

"Jefferson is a very good team, and we held them to 22 points in the first two quarters," he said. "We're going to keep getting better. We've shown in stretches that we can play with some of the better teams on our schedule. We just have to put 40 minutes together. We haven't done that yet."

After falling behind early in the first quarter, Cayuga battled back and trailed by just three at the end of the quarter. The Spartans' defense picked up in the second quarter, when they held the Cannoneers to just six points. Free throws by Cayuga's Lamontiona Johnson briefly put the Spartans ahead 22-21 late in the quarter, but the Cannoneers tied it at 22 going into the break.

The Cannoneers took control early in the third quarter, scoring the first seven points and building a 17-point lead in the frame. Cayuga was unable to cut into the Cannoneers' lead in the fourth quarter.

Haley Mosch led the Spartans with 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Avrey Colton added 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Johnson led the team with 12 rebounds.

Cayuga is off until Tuesday, Nov. 28, when they host Corning Community College.
